Development Pathway & Development Group Selection Criteria 2018
The Board of Scottish Pentathlon has identified and agreed the development pathway for aspiring young athletes for 2018.
Entering the sport through the activities and events staged locally at one of the four established Hubs in Aberdeen, the Borders, Fife and Stirling,, athletes will be able to enjoy taster events in the disciplines of Laser Pistol, Running, Fencing and Swimming.
Each of the Hubs will also arrange local events and competitions, and for those who show promise in these events, arrange coaching tailored to individual athletes needs to provide athletes with the necessary support to progress.
A series of local qualifiers will be held for athletes in each Hub to compete against each other and qualify for an end of year Scottish championships in a relevant discipline (eg: Biathle, Biathlon, Triathle, Triathlon or Tetrathlon) as demand requires.
See below for further details.
In addition, the standards for possible selection to a new Development Group have also been agreed and are set out in the document below.
Laser-Run Competition, 12 May 2018
Stirling Pentathlon is excited to host one of the Great Britain Laser Run Series at the University of Stirling. Laser Run is the exhilarating finale to the Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon with athletes required to alternate between shooting a laser and running in a fast-paced and action-packed race to the finish line. Each competitor shoots down the range at a target using a laser before dashing out onto the track to complete their run. They then return to the range to tackle their next shooting series.
No previous experience is necessary—instruction and equipment will be provided.
As well as giving entrants (aged 8-80) the chance to have a go and compete in Laser Run this event is also a qualifier to compete at the National School Games Final, which will be held at Loughborough University later this summer.

PGB Confirms Competition Programme for 2018
2018 promises to be another busy season with 9 National Championships and 6 National Ranking Competitions filling the Pentathlon GB calendar. Championships will take place in all 7 formats for which Pentathlon GB is the National Governing Body, including the Olympic Sport of modern pentathlon which sees athletes compete in swimming, fencing, horse-riding, running and shooting all in one day.
The year will be highlighted by the British Open Modern Pentathlon Championships which will be hosted at our National Training Centre at The University of Bath. The Championships, to be held on the 9th & 10th of June, will be an Open event for Junior and Senior aged athletes. The best pentathletes from across Great Britain will be competing against each other including Rio 2016 quartet Kate French, Samantha Murray, Joe Choong and Jamie Cooke.
The University of Bath has a rich history when it comes to modern pentathlon with Pentathlon GB’s National Training Centre being based at the university since 1998. In the following 18 years, 5 Olympic medals have returned to the university, starting with Dr Steph Cook’s gold and Kate Allenby’s bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The Championships will be open for the public to watch with spectator initiatives planned to encourage people to both watch and try a new sport. As in 2017, a laser run for all ages is scheduled to run alongside the main event.
The British Open Modern Pentathlon Championships headline a busy domestic calendar with The British Youth and Masters Pentathlon Championships being held on the 24th & 25th June. The Youth Pentathlon Championships will see many stars of the future in action with athletes aged from 11-18 competing to try and become British Champion in their respective age groups. The popular Masters age category (35+) will also compete on the same weekend.
With Pentathlon GB the governing body for events in modern biathlon, modern triathlon, modern tetrathlon, biathle, triathle and laser-run as well as modern pentathlon, there are numerous other British Championships to be held in 2018.
The first of these will be the British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre on the 17th & 18th March. The Schools’ Biathlon Championships will see around 1,500 athletes of school age competing in a separate swim and run competition format, an exciting introduction to multi-discipline sports. The Championships are the culmination of the 2017-2018 modern biathlon series with athletes qualifying for the event at preliminary competitions throughout the country which have been organised over the past couple of months.
Modern triathlon involves swimming followed by a laser-run (combined run and shoot) and the 2017 British Championships will be held on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th September. The British Modern Tetrathlon Championships, which includes adding the fencing discipline to the modern triathlon, will be held on 21st & 22nd April.
The British Biathle Championships, which have now become a core part of the Pentathlon GB calendar, will be held at Salford Quays on Sunday 22nd July. Following successful events in 2016 and 2017, the British Triathle Championships remain at Leweston School in Dorset – a Pentathlon GB Academy – and will be held on Sunday 1st July. After a promising introduction over the last 12 months, including the inaugural British Laser Run Championships, the newest addition to our portfolio of sports will see its National Championships held on 4th and 5th August.
GB athletes have performed extremely well in all three of these formats internationally in recent years, including at the 2017 Biathle and Triathle World Championships in Spain and 2017 Laser Run World Championships in South Africa. Qualifying places for both of these events will once again be up for grabs at the respective national competitions.
The final National Championships of 2017 will be the British Modern Biathlon Championships on 24th & 25th November. The Championships will form part of the 2017-18 Modern Biathlon Series and see athletes of all ages competing for the coveted title of British Champion.
National Ranking Competitions
As has been the case in recent years, the domestic calendar will start will ranking competitions for each of the four age groups that compete internationally (Under 17, Under 19, Junior, Senior). The first national ranking competition will be held on Saturday 13th January for Junior and Senior athletes at our National Training Centre, the University of Bath and West Wiltshire Equestrian Centre. This will be followed by the first Under 19 ranking competition the day after. The second weekend in February (10th & 11th) will follow the same format with Junior and Senior athletes competing on the first day of the competition and Under 19 athletes taking centre stage on the second day.
There will also be two Under 17 ranking competitions ahead of a busy international calendar. These will both be held at Cheltenham Leisure Centre and Hartpury College – a Pentathlon GB Academy – with the first on Sunday 29th April and the second on Sunday 20th May.
