Athlete Pathway

Scottish Pentathlon continues to work with Pentathlon GB and sportscotland to develop and implement the agreed athlete pathway.

We are committed to the implementation and communication of the pathway to support athletes and their parents / guardians to transition from introductory taster and outreach sessions with schools and community groups through into the Regional Hubs, where they may access further coaching support and participate in local events.

Scottish Pentathlon supports the Regional Hubs to identify and agree annual programmes supported by good governance and robust safeguarding procedures within each Hub to give confidence to athletes and parents / guardians that engagement and participation in our sport takes place in an inclusive, safe and fun environment.

Scottish Pentathlon, with these agreements in place, will then also determine, with each Hub, appropriate support for volunteer recruitment, kit provision and maintaining and developing partnerships to help sustain growth and build capacity.

Range of Events

Through the year Scottish Pentathlon will identify a range of national events to be delivered by the Hubs. These national events will include a number of opportunities from across the Modern Pentathlon competition structure(s) which currently includes the following range of events, with distances set across age groups and according to ability:
Modern Biathlon: swim – run
Biathle: continuous run - swim - run
Triathle: continuous shoot - swim - run
Laser-Run: combined run/shoot
Modern Triathlon: swim – shoot – laser-run
Modern Tetrathlon: swim – fence – laser-run
Modern Pentathlon: swim – fence – ride – laser-run

In addition to National competitions staged in Scotland, Scottish Pentathlon also supports teams and groups of athletes to attend Pentathlon GB competitions.

For instance, in 2024 Scottish Pentathlon is supporting a small group of athletes to attend the European Laser Run Qualifiers at Leweston and will be selecting Scottish teams of U17 and U19 athletes to participate in the biennial Youth School Games (www.schoolgamesfinals.org) in Loughborough from Thursday 29 August until Sunday 1 September 2024.

Through participation in our and Pentathlon GB events, athletes will be eligible, where they meet qualifying standards, for selection to GB International teams across the family of sports.

From their international selection and from assessment of their performance in competition, an athlete may then be selected to join the Pentathlon GB Talent Pathway, which enables the continued development of young, talented athletes on their journey towards the performance programme.
